Freshman and Sophomore Seminars: Make a Difference

January 25, 2018

Dear Colleagues,

Our thanks to all of you who have taught Freshman and Sophomore Seminars in the past, providing students with direct access to our stellar faculty in their first year at Cal. With your help, we hope to attract a robust number of faculty members to the program again this coming Fall.

The benefits to our students are immeasurable but participating faculty also enjoy a highly rewarding experience. Comments range from, “Fantastic. One of the best teaching experiences I’ve had,” to “I love teaching this seminar. The students are motivated and interested.”

If you, too, have enjoyed participating in the program, please encourage your colleagues to do the same; you are our best ambassadors. If you have not yet participated, I invite you to contact Alix Schwartz (642-8378, alix@berkeley.edu) to learn more about the teaching rewards and the financial incentives (including a $3,000 research grant to Senate faculty teaching their seminar as an overload).

If you would like to teach a seminar, please fill out the Freshman and Sophomore Seminars faculty participation form by Monday, February 26, and inform your departmental chair and scheduler as soon as possible.

Please do not reply to this message. If you have questions about Freshman and Sophomore Seminars, or just want to brainstorm some topic ideas, feel free to contact Alix Schwartz.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Catherine P. Koshland
