Faculty Advisers for Student Athletes

June 2, 2017

Sent on behalf of Chair Malo Hutson

Dear Deans and Department Chairs,

I am writing as Chair of the Senate Athletics Council (SAC) to ask for your assistance with our efforts to create stronger ties between faculty and student-athletes. We would like to identify those faculty or instructors who might be interested in serving as informal advisers to student-athletes. Please forward this message to interested faculty, and ask them to fill out the form. More information follows.

We are seeking faculty to serve as informal advisers to student-athletes. This adviser role would be broadly focused on supporting student-athletes in their academic pursuits and advising them on the educational and career choices that follow graduation. A student-athlete might contact a faculty member on the “advisers” list to get information about prospective majors, course selection, or post-graduation options. Advisers might also be available to meet with potential student-athletes who are being recruited to talk about their fields of expertise or their departmental majors.

Faculty identified through this outreach effort might also be interested in joining the Faculty Fellows Program, which affiliates faculty in a formal way with particular athletic teams. Both of these arrangements give student-athletes greater access to faculty members, and to the kind of academic and professional guidance they might not otherwise receive.

Feel free to contact me, the SAC Chair (mhutson@berkeley.edu), with questions. Interested faculty should fill out the form.
