Catherine P. Koshland

Vice Chancellor
Undergraduate Education

Catherine P. Koshland is the Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education at UC Berkeley, and the Wood-Calvert Professor in the College of Engineering. She is a professor of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health and a professor in the Energy and Resources Group. Professor Koshland graduated with a B.A. in Fine Arts from Haverford College, studied painting at the New York School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, and received her M.S. in 1978 and her Ph.D. in 1985 in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. She was a former member of the Haverford College Board of Managers from 1994-2014 and served as Board Co-Chair from 2005-09 and Chair from 2009-14. She is a past parent at Cal with daughter Sarah a 1999 graduate and daughter Maggie a 2002 graduate. Her husband Jim Koshland is a UCBF Trustee. Son Jacob (Williams ’09) is attending Haas to earn his MBA and is an ardent Cal fan.

Among Vice Chancellor Koshland’s responsibilities are major operating units, including Summer Sessions, Study Abroad and Lifelong Learning (SSALL), the Athletic Study Center, The Student Learning Center, and Research, Teaching, and Learning Support (includes Educational Technology Services and Digital Content Services). Her office has responsibility for several strategic academic initiatives and programs, including Berkeley Connect, the Berkeley Collegium, the American Cultures Center, and Berkeley Arts + Design, and provides support to faculty development through the Center for Teaching and Learning. In addition, her office advises on enrollment planning and management, and serves as a liaison for academic units with many campus administrative offices. She convenes the Council of College Deans.

Rick Russo

Richard (Rick) Russo

Associate Vice Chancellor

Rick provides leadership around budget, finance, accounting, organizational structure, and strategy. He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Alfred University, a Master’s of Business Administration from Boston University, and is a Certified Public Accountant. Rick joined the UC Berkeley community in 2005 as the Director of Summer Sessions and in 2011 began serving as the Dean of Summer Sessions, Study Abroad and Lifelong Learning (SSALL).

Cindy Bumgarner

Assistant Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff

With a wealth of experience in public undergraduate education in both the CSU and UC systems, Dr. Bumgarner's focus is centered on teaching, research, and on academic program development with an emphasis on technology-enhanced instruction. She holds a Master's degree in German and a Doctorate in Educational Technology.

Mariana Corzo

Manager of Strategic Cross-Divisional Initiatives


Mariana leads change management and communication efforts related to key cross-divisional campus initiatives and organizational changes that require strong collaboration and support. Mariana received her undergraduate degree and MBA from UCLA, where she worked in student affairs. She also spent eight years in the private sector at Ford Motor Company, PepsiCola Company, and Del Monte Foods.

Monica Garcia

Executive Assistant to the 
Vice Chancellor 


Monica has worked in VCUE for more than five years. Prior to working at UC Berkeley, she had more than seven years of student-focused higher education experience. She is responsible for managing the VCUE calendar and the daily operation of the immediate office. She manages workflow, the Student Advisory Committee on Undergraduate Education (SACUE), and oversees VCUE student employees.

Leslie R. Harlson

Project/Policy Analyst


Leslie's work focuses on the Discovery initiative and the Golden Bear Experience, among other priorities and ad hoc projects. Before joining the VCUE team in February 2016, she managed Summer Sessions' relationships with partner universities around the world. Prior to joining UC Berkeley, she worked for the German government's higher education arm and in the non-profit/philanthropy sector.
Moon Jang Shinn

Moon Jang-Shinn

Director of Finance

As the Director of Finance, Moon supervises the VCUE financial staff. She is also the Chief Administrative Officer for Summer Sessions, Study Abroad, and Lifelong Learning (SSALL) and oversees Student Services, Information Technology, and Finance. Moon’s career at Berkeley spans 12 years and several positions.

Audrey Thomas

Institutional Research Analyst


Audrey leverages campus, UC-wide, and national data to inform policies that improve the experience of undergraduates at UC Berkeley. She earned a B.A. in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Harvard. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at National University of Ireland, Galway.

Anthony Yuen

Project Manager


Anthony supports VCUE projects such as the Undergraduate Initiative and Golden Bear Orientation. He holds a M.Ed. in Counseling & Student Affairs from UCLA and has more than ten years experience in higher education, including international education, student advising, program design, and strategic communications. Before joining VCUE, Anthony served as Communications Strategist for Summer Sessions, Study Abroad & Lifelong Learning (SSALL) and was a 2015-16 Fellow for the Robert Bosch Foundation in Germany.
